One of this year’s SECA recipients is Max’s Mission, a small nonprofit that received $2,500. Their work, supporting families impacted by suicide loss, is something I believe every human being would view as a worthy cause. (Link in comments)
This is also what makes SECA tricky. The program wasn’t originally designed to fund small local charities like this, but is supporting Max’s Mission a good thing? Absolutely.
At the same time, we need to be honest: there are at least a handful of SECA recipients that do engage in politics or have potential conflicts of interest. That’s where scrutiny is necessary.
SECA is strongest when it lifts up organizations like Max’s Mission while also ensuring accountability so every dollar goes where it should.
